2025 BAFTA Nominations: Sebastian Stan Recognized for Playing Donald Trump, 'Conclave' Dominates

Sebastian Stan has earned a significant awards season nomination for his portrayal of Donald Trump, just days before the presidential inauguration and the announcement of the Oscar nominees. The 2025 BAFTA Awards nominations, which are highly regarded as a key precursor to the Academy Awards, were revealed this morning, with Conclave, Ralph Fiennes’ highly anticipated papal drama, leading the way with 12 nominations. It was closely followed by Emilia Pérez, which garnered 11 nominations.

The two films will compete for the prestigious Best Film award alongside The Brutalist, which recently won the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Drama, as well as A Complete Unknown and Anora.

Stan’s portrayal of Trump in the period biopic The Apprentice earned him this latest recognition, following his earlier nods from the Indie Spirit Awards. While the film struggled at the box office, Stan’s performance was widely praised, as was Jeremy Strong’s turn as lawyer Roy Cohn. Strong, who is also a new BAFTA nominee, portrays Cohn in Ali Abbasi’s film, which details Trump’s early years in the 1980s New York business scene.

Trump’s team publicly criticized the film in May 2024, even hinting at legal action against those behind it. Despite this, Strong shared that he hoped Trump would watch the film. “I think there’s a lot in it that he would recognize. I hope he sees it. That would alone be worth making it,” Strong said.

Among other notable BAFTA nominees, Emilia Pérez saw multiple nominations for Selena Gomez, Zoe Saldaña, and Karla Sofía Gascón, who is making waves as the potential first trans actress nominated for Best Actress at the Oscars. Other standouts include Colman Domingo (Sing Sing), Timothée Chalamet (A Complete Unknown), the Wicked duo of Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, and current Best Actress frontrunner Demi Moore for The Substance.

However, some key exclusions from the BAFTA nominations raised eyebrows. Wicked was notably absent from the Best Film category despite receiving multiple acting and technical nominations. Angelina Jolie also missed out on a Best Actress nomination after failing to appear on the BAFTA’s longlist for Maria.

The BAFTA and Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences share many of the same voting members, leading to common nominees and winners between the two award shows. Over the past decade, only two BAFTA Best Film winners have also won the Academy Award for Best Picture (Oppenheimer and Nomadland), but every one of the BAFTA’s Best Film category winners has secured an Oscar nomination for Best Picture.

The 2025 BAFTA Awards will announce their winners on February 16. See the full list of nominations below.
