Armie Hammer has opened up about the fallout from his Hollywood exit in 2021 and the personal and public challenges that followed. The Backlash and Public Fascination
Hammer believes the public latched onto the allegations against him as a distraction from the difficulties of the COVID-19 pandemic. “The world seemed like it was falling apart, and people were just deeply unhappy with their own lives,” he said. “Then this salacious story comes around about this actor wanting to murder and eat people. Suddenly, everyone’s like, ‘This is more fun to focus on than the fact that I can’t leave my living room.’”
The allegations began in early 2021 when several accusations of sexual misconduct, including disturbing claims of violence and rape, surfaced online. These culminated in March 2021 with ex-partner Effie Angelova accusing Hammer of rape and other abusive acts during their four-year relationship. Hammer denied the allegations, and in May 2023, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office declined to press charges, citing insufficient evidence and the complexity of the relationships involved.

Among the most sensational claims were accusations that Hammer harbored cannibalistic fantasies. Addressing his sexuality, Hammer explained on the podcast that some of the allegations stemmed from consensual fantasies shared with partners. “I like the idea that you are so completely mine,” he said, describing his preference for tying up partners during intimacy. “I can do whatever I want, and you love it because you know you’re mine.”

After retreating from the spotlight, Hammer faced a dramatic lifestyle shift, including a stint selling timeshares in the Cayman Islands. Now living in what he calls a “tiny-ass apartment,” the actor has been reflecting on his past behavior and its impact. He described his relationships as intense but short-lived, noting, “I would scoop these girls up, take them on a whirlwind month and a half… then I’m gonna bounce and do it with someone else.”
Hammer also acknowledged the potential long-term effects of his actions on his children. “I’m aware my daughter and son will one day go to therapy and say, ‘I hate my dad, too,’” he said.

Hammer made a brief return to entertainment in December 2023, appearing in a music video that humorously addressed the cannibalism allegations. He is set to appear in the upcoming Western Frontier Crucible, starring William H. Macy, marking his first major role since his hiatus.
