A seemingly simple invitation to an exclusive listening party takes a bizarre turn for The Bear Emmy-winning actress Ayo Edebiri in the new A24 horror film Opus.
In the first trailer for the film, directed by Mark Anthony Green, Edebiri plays Ariel, a young magazine writer tasked with investigating a celebrity cult. Her journey begins when she unexpectedly receives an invitation to cover a listening party for the new album of pop legend Moretti (played by John Malkovich). Moretti, who vanished from the public eye for 30 years, is making a comeback with a highly anticipated album.
As the trailer reveals, the event quickly takes a strange and unsettling turn. “Mr. Moretti will be playing the greatest album of modern times…future times, all the times, really,” says Tony Hale’s character, a shaggy figure involved in the cult. Ariel attends the weekend event, surrounded by Moretti’s loyal followers and intoxicated journalists. The trip begins with her and her colleague (Murray Bartlett) boarding a private jet, featuring blacked-out windows, a mute pilot, and a fridge stocked only with seltzer and yak milk.

Upon arrival at the compound, things grow even stranger. Ariel is told she must trim her “lady garden” because Moretti insists on everyone being shaved. She soon discovers that she can’t even go for a run without being shadowed by one of Moretti’s dangerous zealots, played by Amber Midthunder.
Joining Edebiri in the film are Juliette Lewis (Yellowjackets), Young Mazino (The Last of Us), Stephanie Suganami (Power Book II: Ghost), and Tatanka Means (Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1).
Edebiri’s rising fame continues after her breakout role in The Bear. She has expanded her filmography with roles in Bottoms, Theater Camp, Inside Out 2, and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
Opus will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, on January 27. Check out the eerie trailer above.
