Bluey Heads to the Big Screen: Disney and BBC Team Up for Feature Film Coming in 2027
Beloved blue heeler Bluey is making her way to theaters! Fans of the popular animated series can look forward to a feature-length film set to premiere in 2027, thanks to a collaboration between BBC Studios and Walt Disney Studios.
This exciting announcement marks a new milestone for the global phenomenon, which has captured the hearts of children and adults alike. Known for its heartfelt storytelling and imaginative adventures, Bluey follows the lively escapades of its titular character, a playful and curious pup, alongside her family—Mum (Chilli), Dad (Bandit), and younger sister Bingo.
The Bluey movie will be helmed by series creator Joe Brumm, who will write and co-direct the film alongside Richard Jeffrey, a key director from seasons two and three. Amber Naismith, whose previous credits include Happy Feet and The Lego Movie, is on board as producer. Fans will be delighted to know that Melanie Zanetti and David McCormack will reprise their roles as Chilli and Bandit, respectively, while the show’s uncredited child actors are also expected to return.

However, the exciting movie news comes with a bittersweet note. Brumm announced in a blog post that he plans to step back from his work on the Bluey TV series as it enters its fourth season.
“I always said I wouldn’t keep making the show if I thought I couldn’t make any new season as good as the last,” Brumm wrote. “This would have been the case for me with a potential season four, so I’ve decided to take a break from my involvement in the TV series.”
Brumm also revealed that he views The Sign, the show’s first special-length episode at 28 minutes, as his personal finale for the series. The poignant episode left many fans wondering if it marked the show’s conclusion, especially given the aging of the young cast members.
“Bluey has completely changed my life,” Brumm reflected. “To walk away from it while it’s at such a height will seem crazy to some, but, for now, I am finding it difficult to reach back genuinely into that four- to six-year-old world and write authentically.”
Brumm clarified, however, that his decision to take a step back does not necessarily spell the end of the show. “This is not an announcement about the end of the show, but it is an acknowledgment that my focus will be on the film,” he wrote.
Since its debut in 2018, Bluey has become a cultural sensation. The series has earned accolades such as Emmy and BAFTA awards, topped streaming charts on Disney+, and inspired a treasure trove of merchandise and even a video game. With its humor, emotional depth, and universal appeal, Bluey continues to enchant audiences worldwide, solidifying its place as a cherished staple of children’s entertainment.
As fans eagerly await the movie’s release, one thing is certain: Bluey’s impact will continue to ripple through families, inspiring joy and imagination for years to come.
