A new series is in the works, stemming from CBS’s hit drama FBI, with the working title FBI: CIA, according to Entertainment Weekly.
The spinoff will introduce three characters in a forthcoming episode of the procedural drama, with the show’s development led by executive producer and writer Dick Wolf. If the plans come to fruition, the series is expected to premiere during the 2025-2026 TV season, and casting for key roles is currently underway.
FBI, which debuted in 2018, follows agents working out of the FBI’s New York City field office. The main cast, including Jeremy Sisto, Missy Peregrym, and Zeeko Zaki, has remained intact for all seven seasons, including the latest one that launched in October.
The official premise for FBI: CIA describes a dynamic partnership: “A by-the-book FBI agent teams up with a streetwise CIA agent as part of a covert taskforce dedicated to combating and preventing domestic terrorism in and around New York City.”

The show, produced by Universal Television and CBS under Universal Studio Group, will also have David Hudgins, Nicole Perlman, and David Chasteen (a former CIA officer) on board as executive producers and writers. Peter Jankowski will also serve as an executive producer.
Dick Wolf’s expansive crime drama universe already encompasses three other FBI-themed series on CBS: FBI, FBI: International, and FBI: Most Wanted. CBS has invested heavily in both the FBI and NCIS franchises.
In a February 2019 panel discussion at New York’s 92nd Street Y, Wolf shared his thoughts on the enduring appeal of procedurals. “Procedurals occupy a unique space in television,” he said. “I’m a big fan of them because I love storytelling.” He emphasized his preference for closed-ended episodes, explaining that viewers can watch a complete story within the span of an hour, regardless of which episode they tune into. “It’s comfort food,” he noted. “If you’re sitting at home and have an hour, you’ll get a full, satisfying story.”
FBI airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on CBS.
