After causing a brief surprise on Good Morning America by calling Lara Spencer “ma’am,” actor Gabriel Basso found himself in another awkward but funny moment during his appearance on Live with Kelly and Mark. This time, his attempt to avoid hugging Kelly Ripa in front of her husband, Mark Consuelos, left everyone laughing.
Basso, promoting the second season of The Night Agent on Netflix, made his entrance to applause on Thursday’s show. As he walked toward Ripa, he quickly extended his hand for a handshake. Ripa, initially ready for a hug, adjusted and accepted the handshake before embracing Basso.
“Welcome! Hello! We do hugs here. Is that okay? Was that weird?” Ripa joked about the situation, trying to ease the awkwardness.

Basso, explaining his hesitation, responded, “No, I just… you’re married, I just wanted to give you a handshake.” His comment caused Consuelos to laugh.
Ripa playfully added, “Well, Mark was going to hug you first, but I wanted to make him feel less weird about it.” Basso admitted he missed Consuelos’ attempt to hug him but quickly assured everyone, “It’s all good,” as the interview moved on.
This amusing moment follows Basso’s polite interaction with Spencer on Good Morning America, where he referred to her as “ma’am,” causing the anchor to lightly chide him: “Oh, don’t call me ma’am!”
Basso’s appearances are in support of The Night Agent season 2, which premieres January 23 on Netflix. The show helped elevate Basso’s career after his role as J.D. Vance in Ron Howard’s 2020 film Hillbilly Elegy.
