In an exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly, Lucky Starzzz opens up about her experience on RuPaul’s Drag Race season 17, including the highs and lows, her design challenge struggle, and the emotional moment that felt like a “panic attack” on the runway.
Although Lucky didn’t win the crown, she made her mark on Drag Race fans with her quirky drag creations and memorable moments, despite being eliminated in 14th place. In an honest conversation with EW, Lucky discusses her time on the show, including her complicated relationship with Nina Bo’Nina Brown and whether she ever got a chance to “paint” with Arrietty.
Arrietty and the “Painting” Moment
Fans were buzzing after Arrietty’s confessional mention of wanting Lucky to “paint” her. Lucky describes the situation as lighthearted and fun, adding that they shared a flirtatious connection, but didn’t take things further.
“I think it was so funny and cute. I love weird little metaphors,” she says. “I was feeling her. We did like each other, and I thought she was charming. She’s my closest friend from the cast after the show. I’ll leave it a bit of a mystery.”
Asked whether they had any “art classes” together after the show, Lucky laughs and confirms, “No painting lessons. Maybe one day we’ll do makeup on each other. But no painting for now.”
When asked about Kori and Lydia, Lucky jokes, “They have a whole art studio together. They’re painting the house down! I see the paint splatters everywhere.”

Drama in the Werk Room
The episode featured tension between Joella, Hormona Lisa, and Lexi Love, with Lucky addressing some of the drama. She refers to Hormona Lisa’s fiery presence as “Hormonas” and shares her thoughts on their relationship.
“Hormona definitely ruffled some feathers. I lived for Hormona, she was so sweet to me and one of my best friends while filming. She got me mad one time, but it was little, petty stuff,” Lucky reveals. “It was just a weird situation that pissed me off.”
She also recalls an off-camera moment involving Lexi confronting Hormona for breaking the rules by adding rhinestones to her design. “It was a crazy little morning. I wish it had been captured on camera because it was a cute little fight.”
The Relationship with Nina Bo’Nina Brown
Lucky also opens up about her evolving relationship with season 9’s Nina Bo’Nina Brown, who had been a mentor and a sort-of drag mother. Their relationship became strained during the audition process, with Lucky admitting, “We weren’t talking when I auditioned, but she helped me with my tape. Things changed after I got cast. I was upset when she didn’t help me prepare, and eventually, she unfollowed me.”
Despite the fallout, Lucky says that they recently spoke after months of silence. “I just want to be cordial. We’re cordial, I think. I hope.”
Lucky humorously refers to herself as Nina’s “drag abortion” but expresses ongoing respect for Nina’s art. “I’m always going to be a fan,” she adds. “It is what it is.”
The Design Challenge Breakdown
When it came to the week’s design challenge, Lucky struggled with working with fabric, something she’s not used to. “I don’t sew gowns, I don’t sew dresses. I create characters, I craft things, but I don’t work with cloth.”
During the challenge, Lucky became visibly uncomfortable as she felt out of her element. “I honestly felt so ugly,” she admits. “I felt like a failure, which is one of my worst fears. My drag was busted, and all of that came together.”
The emotional turmoil led to a breakdown on the runway, which she describes as feeling like a panic attack. “Imagine having a panic attack in public, in front of RuPaul. That’s how I felt,” she shares.
Despite this, Lucky encourages fans to continue supporting her. “Support my Instagram, Facebook, my painting page! Just kidding! Keep me out there, keep me traveling, keep me touring.”
RuPaul’s Drag Race season 17 airs Fridays at 8 p.m. on MTV. Stay tuned for more updates on Lucky’s journey and future endeavors.
